So I saw Matilda when I was in my final year of secondary school, saw it on Broadway and it was an absolute fantastic show as you would expect with Broadway, but he moment that stood out most to me was the “When I Grow Up song. It’s all about the child characters looking forward to when they grow up. And the thing that struck me was the bitter sweetness of it.These children desperate to grow up and put away all the childish things and move on to the adult things and I’m sitting there just about to go off to Uni and looking back on everything. I’m leaving behind. This contrast just really, really struck me. I think it showed me what theatre can do so well, what good writing, good acting good music can do in a show and the impact it can have on an audience member who is really just sitting there watching something. But then suddenly from this song they’re so involved and immersed in the piece. It was just life changing really.
